What happens if you reply to a scam text?

Updated October 23, 2026

A reply by itself doesn't take anything from your phone, but it tells the sender your number is real and that someone reads it, so expect more scam texts. Replying "Y" can also switch on a link your iPhone had turned off. The FCC says not to respond to texts from unknown numbers or ones that look suspicious. If you only replied, report the text and delete it.

What a reply does

The FCC's advice: "Do not respond to texts from unknown numbers, or any others that appear suspicious."

Should you reply STOP?

Businesses that text you with your permission have to let you opt out by replying, so STOP works for a store or service you know you signed up with. Scammers don't follow those rules. For anything you don't recognize, Verizon says not to reply, and to report the text and delete it instead.

Questions

Is it safe to reply STOP to a spam text?

Only to a business you know you signed up with, like a store you gave your number to. Real businesses that text you have to let you opt out by replying. For anything suspicious, Verizon's advice is: "Don't reply, and don't tap or open any links." Report it instead.

Can replying to a scam text hack my phone?

Sending a reply doesn't install anything. The risk comes from what happens next: more scam texts, a link you tap, information you share, or money you send.

I replied to a wrong-number text and we've been chatting. Is that bad?

It's how many scams start. Stop replying and read about wrong-number texts that turn into scams.
