Does the DMV text you?
Updated October 27, 2026
Sometimes, but only for reminders you signed up for. Some state DMVs, such as New York, Virginia and Idaho, offer text reminders for license and registration renewals. DMVs say they don't text you to pay a traffic ticket, toll or fine, and don't threaten suspension by text. A surprise DMV text with a payment link is a scam.
When a DMV really texts you
Some DMVs send texts, but only reminders you asked for. A few examples from the DMVs' own pages:
| State | What it texts | How you get them |
|---|---|---|
| New York | Renewal reminders for your license, ID, registration and inspection, from short code 69368 | Sign up for Electronic Reminders in your MyDMV account |
| Virginia | Reminders for license, ID and vehicle registration renewals | Sign up in your DMV online account |
| Idaho | Renewal reminders and updates when your driver status changes | Opt in on the DMV online site |
California's DMV also says some offices may send official reminders. So a DMV text can be real when it matches something you signed up for, like a renewal coming up or an appointment you booked. New York's DMV asks you not to reply to its reminder texts.
What a real DMV text never does
The DMVs that have warned about fake texts say the same things:
- No payment links. California's DMV says it doesn't send texts with links to make payments.
- No tickets, tolls or fines by text. North Carolina's attorney general says the DMV doesn't collect traffic tickets by text. Virginia's DMV says it will never send texts or emails about your fines or suspensions.
- No threats. New York's DMV says it will never send a text threatening you to pay within days or risk suspension. Vermont's DMV says it doesn't suspend licenses or registrations by text.
- No personal or financial details. California's DMV says it will never ask for personal or financial information by text, such as your Social Security number, bank details or full license number.
West Virginia's DMV goes further and says it doesn't send out texts at all.
Signs a DMV text is fake
- It says you owe money for a traffic ticket, a toll or a fine, and gives you a link to pay.
- It threatens you with a deadline, like penalties starting tomorrow, a suspended license, collections, or damage to your credit score.
- It names an agency that doesn't exist, such as a "Department of Vehicles," or a toll in a state with no toll roads. Vermont has none.
- The link only looks official. North Carolina's attorney general described a fake link made to look like a .gov address whose real domain ended in .cc.
- You never signed up for DMV texts. The reminder programs above only text people who opted in.
- It tells you to reply Y to turn on the link. That's a trick to get around your iPhone's protection against links from unknown senders. More on the reply-Y trick.
The "Final Notice: Enforcement Penalties Begin" text has gone out in many states with only the state name changed. See the exact wording.
How to check safely
Don't tap the link or reply. Type your state DMV's website address yourself, or call the number on a letter or card you already have from the DMV, and check there. New York's DMV reminds drivers that its only website is dmv.ny.gov. If you got a ticket, follow the instructions on the paper citation. For a toll, go to your toll agency's website directly. If you already tapped the link or paid
- You paid with a card: call your bank or card company right away, using the number on your card, and ask them to stop or reverse the charge.
- You entered your license number, Social Security number or a sign-in code: follow what to do if you clicked a scam link, and if you shared a code, what to do if you gave someone a verification code.
Report it
- Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) so your carrier can block similar messages, then delete it. How to report spam texts on iPhone.
- Report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- In North Carolina, the attorney general asks people to report these texts to its Consumer Protection Division. Other states' attorneys general take scam reports too.
